Sam Munro’s Career in Arboriculture
From Forestry to Consulting
From forestry in southern New Zealand to climbing, consulting and local government, Sam’s career shows just how many paths arboriculture can open up.
Born and raised in Dunedin, Enviro Trees Consulting Arborist Sam Munro has built a career spanning practical tree work, consulting, tree risk management and client-focused arboriculture.
Where It All Began
Sam spent much of his twenties working in forestry across southern New Zealand, while also travelling the world playing rugby.
During this time, he began building his formal arboricultural qualifications, completing his Level 3 studies before moving to Melbourne in 2012.
Building Experience on the Ground
After relocating to Melbourne, Sam spent three years working as a climbing arborist while studying towards his Level 5 Diploma in Arboriculture.
That hands-on experience gave him a strong understanding of tree work, site safety, changing conditions and the practical challenges arborists face every day.
Moving Into Consulting
After completing his Level 5 qualification, Sam transitioned into consulting with a planning arboriculture company.
He later joined Banyule City Council as a Planning Arborist, where he gained valuable experience in development, tree retention, planning and urban tree management.
Broadening His Experience
After moving to Sydney, Sam completed his Level 8 qualification in late 2020.
He went on to work in client relations and business development with CIVICA ArborSafe, before taking on the role of Tree Management Coordinator with the City of Sydney.
These roles broadened his experience across tree risk assessment, consulting, local government, client management and operational tree services.
Joining Enviro Trees
Sam joined Enviro Trees in mid-2023, bringing with him more than a decade of practical, technical and client-facing experience across the arboriculture industry.
Today, he works closely with clients and Tree Partners to deliver arboricultural consulting across tree risk assessments, development and planning advice, tree management plans, reporting and practical recommendations for complex sites and portfolios.
His background across climbing, consulting, local government and client-facing roles gives him a practical understanding of both what happens on site and what clients need from clear, defensible arboricultural advice.
Sam also plays an important role in helping clients take a more proactive approach to tree management, identifying risks early and supporting informed decisions around maintenance, planning and long-term asset management.
More Than One Career Path
Sam’s story is a strong example of how varied a career in arboriculture can be.
The skills built through forestry and climbing can open the door to consulting, planning, local government, tree risk management and client-focused roles.
From the forests of southern New Zealand to consulting across Australia, Sam’s journey shows just how far a career in arboriculture can take you.
Outside of work, Sam is also a father of two, adding another important chapter to a journey that has already covered plenty of ground.
